What Is Folkedelic Art?
Folkedelic is an art style developed by Shawn Brown over more than a decade in Berks County, PA. Influenced by her father’s Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and her mother’s love of flowers, Shawn blends vibrant colors into a never-ending kaleidoscope of natural beauty.
~A Surface—Any Surface~
Folkedelic didn’t begin with a plan—it began with a need. Not for recognition or reward, but for the simple act of creating.
As Shawn explains, it’s “a style derived from a need for an artist to put paint down on a surface—any surface.”
From wooden chairs and shutters to cabinets, boxes, and cutting boards, each piece is given a second life through color and pattern.
~Texture, Dimension, Design~
Shawn’s artistic foundation was shaped through decades of hands-on creative work.
She spent 35 years running Jackie and Daughter Flower Shop alongside her mother, designing everything from Valentine’s arrangements to weddings and proms.
She says “creating texture, dimension and applying design techniques” are hallmarks of her Folkedelic style.
~All The Beauty That Surrounds Us~
Folkedelic embraces the idea of functional art—bringing creativity into everyday life. Shawn often works on reclaimed materials, transforming discarded objects into something vibrant and new.
In addition to her artwork, Shawn is the Senior Visitor Experience Manager at the Rodale Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to regenerative organic agriculture.
Her work is grounded in “a love of expression, acknowledging all the beauty that surrounds us… our lovely organic planet.”
